Flanked on a hillside, the village unfolds its streets, alleys and stairs like a waterfall towards the Viroin. Bathed in exceptional flora and fauna, the houses stand at the foot of the castle.
The village exudes a Mediterranean atmosphere. The small, densely built streets cascading down the hillside give it that sunny touch. The Viroin, a calm and clear stream, flows through the village and winds around the green meadows at the edge of the gardens. The stone houses are nestled at the foot of the majestic castle of the Counts of Hamal. Remodelled over the centuries, it is mainly in the classical style. Its former owners had an impressive neoclassical mausoleum erected in the village cemetery. The church of Saints Rufin and Valère, as well as the covered washhouse dating from the 19th century, add charm to the built-up area.
On the outskirts of the village, a distinctive landscape emerges; calcareous grasslands with very interesting fauna and flora. The former sheep grazing land was overgrown in the early 20th century and is now the subject of restoration projects. A steam train is the region’s highlight, allowing you to discover this unique decor. It links Mariembourg to Treignes and passes through the village. Vierves is also famous for its carnival, an authentic regional folkloric event.
