Old stones …

It is in the surrounding countryside of Wéris, between fields and meadows, on a plateau with colourful landscapes on the banks of the Ourthe and Aisne rivers, that the stones of legend have found refuge: here, “La Pierre Haina” (The Haina Stone), there, “Le Pas Bayard” (The Bayard Pass), and further on, “Le Lit du Diable” (The Devil’s Bed). Built of local puddingstone, these stones and many others make up the largest concentration of megaliths, dolmens or menhirs, the best preserved in the country, a site classified as exceptional heritage in Wallonia. Leaving history behind, the paths lead you to the heart of a charming rural village with a rich heritage of irregularly laid out streets and alleys.

There are half-timbered limestone and sandstone houses and farms. An old fortified house, a modest timber-framed dwelling, give way here and there to elements as distinctive as bakehouses, chapels and remarkable trees. All this is gathered around the Roman church of Saint Walburge. The listed church dates from the 11th century but was particularly altered in the 16th and 18th centuries. Its stained glass windows recently underwent a major renovation.

Finally, the visit can end with a glass of Dolmenius, a homemade beer that cannot be found anywhere else.
