Saint-Hadelin Hermitage and Stations of the Cross in Celles

Overlooking the village to the south, the old Saint-Hadelin hermitage seems to watch over the village.

Built in the 19th century, the neo-Romanesque building is set around a courtyard bordered by two perpendicular wings of limestone and brick. On the ground floor, galleries with arcades open onto the courtyard and the statue of Saint-Hadelin. Each of the limestone columns is surmounted by a capital with an inverted fleur-de-lis motif. Announced by the spire of its tower-porch, a chapel closes the ensemble to the north.

On the hillside, a Way of the Cross links the collegiate church to the hermitage. The fourteen stations of this beautiful access ramp have been revisited in a modern and symbolic way by the artist Pierre Courtois.
