The Vierves-sur-Viroin carnival has its origins in the Middle Ages: in the 12th century, a certain Johan Simon, a free bourgeois, sought to oppose the power of Robert II, a cruel character and lord of the place. Imprisoned, he managed to escape and received help from the villagers. Unfortunately, he was recaptured and sentenced to be burnt alive in the village square.

It is this tragic story that the carnival of Vierves-sur-Viroin commemorates in a mocking way.
