Perched on a promontory, Gros-Fays offers magnificent views of the Semois valley. The village exudes tranquillity with its castle farm, old brewery, and slate houses.
Situated on the edge of the forest and perched on the side of a hill, the village is a flagship of Ardennes authenticity. Most houses were built of shale stone from the quarry down below. These traditional houses, beautifully decorated with flowers in summer, offer a masterful display of serenity. The history of Gros-Fays can be read from its walls, the traces of its former activities are everywhere: a 16th century castle farm, a church, an old brewery, a mill, but also tobacco drying sheds, a washhouse and watering places. A 2 km interpretation tour with educational boards allows visitors to discover these different elements.
Leaving the history behind, you can admire the voluptuous foliage of the surrounding area, where the oak tree reigns supreme. The forest offers superb landscapes, and in the background, you can see the meandering Semois river. It’s a call to discover it; why not by kayak for a refreshing, playful activity. You can also enjoy refreshments in the centre of the village in the Lallemand café. This establishment has kept its old bistro character, and the village atmosphere is surprisingly original and authentic.
