When traditional housing was arranged in a terraced sequence, it was not always possible to access the gardens to store materials.

To remedy this, the houses were set back slightly from the street: the outdoor space thus created in front of the houses was called a “usoir”.

Open to the public space and free of private use, it was used to store farm equipment and wood or manure.
