Traditional Ardennes dwellings in Gros-Fays

A traditional house shaped to adapt to the rigours of the region's climate.
The village of Gros-Fays is mainly made up of traditional houses representative of the Ardennes block farm.
In response to the rigours of the region’s climate, they are characterised by a low, deep silhouette, crushed under a wide, low-pitched slate roof (to ensure that the snow stays on the roof and forms an insulating layer in winter), and relatively closed shale stone masonry.
To encourage better light penetration, “delarded” wooden lintels (with a bevel at the bottom) still adorn some of the openings and proudly mark their belonging to the Ardennes!
