Montignies-sur-Roc
The pearl of the Hauts-Pays! The origin of Montignies-sur-Roc dates back over ten centuries. This pretty village is part of Hauts-Pays Natural Park and owes its name to its position on a rock, overloo...
Along that road, you'll find a whole series of artisans and producers: Brasserie des Rocs, which brews and exports very popular beers, the Pype farm and its range of farm produce, and two ceramic workshops "La Roquette" and "Le Plat Caillou" in the street of the same name. Montignies-sur-Roc is clearly the village of potters and ceramicists as a third workshop (Céramique de Dour) presents its work in Rue Goutrielle.
The village is based around the very beautiful Place Fulgence Masson. The tree-lined square is notable for its configuration, lime trees and old "Tournai-style" houses surrounding it.
Montignies-sur-Roc is a fascinating village where you'll be happy to linger and explore the many paths and old staircases connecting the upper and lower village. On the way, you'll see the old mill, the wetland of the Petite Honnelle Valley (a real treasure trove for nature lovers), Our Lady Church and its artificial cave, as well as all the religious heritage (the Calvary, Rosary Chapel, old cemetery and Our Lady of Cambrai Chapel).
Another monument is well worth a second look: Château de la Motte Baraffe, a Tournai-type castle rebuilt at the end of the 17th century on the site of the old feudal château dating from the 16th century.
You might be surprised to find such a rustic and unspoilt location in the heart of Hainaut.
